Each spoke represents one part of the Noble Eightfold Path, the core practical teaching of Buddhism.
What the Eight Spokes Mean
Each spoke symbolizes one of the eight qualities a person cultivates on the path toward awareness and liberation:
- Right View
- Right Intention
- Right Speech
- Right Action
- Right Livelihood
- Right Effort
- Right Mindfulness
- Right Concentration
These eight factors form a complete, balanced training in wisdom, ethical conduct, and mental discipline. The wheel shape reinforces the idea that the teaching is meant to be put into motion, not just understood intellectually.
Why a Wheel?
In early Buddhist tradition, when the Buddha gave his first teaching, he was said to have “set the wheel of Dharma in motion.” The wheel became a symbol of teaching, movement, and spiritual sovereignty — a truth that rolls outward into the world.
Why Eight?
Eight spokes visually communicate that the teaching is complete and integrated. It’s a compact symbol that reminds practitioners of the entire path at a glance.
